At the 2025 Tokyo Auto Salon, Mazda formally presented its racing car series, the eagerly awaited Mazda Spirit Racing Roadster. The production version remains impressively similar to the original design. This will please fans of the concept.
Mazda unveiled the Mazda Spirit Racing Roadster 12R and Mazda Spirit Racing Roadster, two unique versions of the legendary MX-5, at the event. Both versions use motorsports technology that Mazda Spirit Racing created while competing in the Super Taikyu Series in Japan.
Mazda Roadster 12R Spirit Racing
The most potent engine ever created for an MX-5 receives an additional degree of attention and care. Mazda will hand-build the engines for those 200 units. Speaking of the engine, it is a 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G four-cylinder that Spirit Racing has tuned. It produces an incredible 197 horsepower. In contrast, the 2025 MX-5 base model can push 181 horsepower.
After that, the MX-5 12R gets a unique body kit. It includes height-adjustable Bilstein dampers and a Fujitsubo exhaust. To go with its distinctive “Aero Grey” paint job, the MX-5 12R’s exterior and interior also feature subtle red highlights and Spirit Racing decals. Mazda will offer the roadster only with a soft top.
To save weight, Mazda chose Rays TE37 wheels for each corner. The company also installed Brembo brakes on the front pair.
Recaro provided the seats, while Alcantara covers the center console, gearshift, and steering wheel. The car’s only possible gearbox is a six-speed manual transmission. The driver operates it through the gearshift. All 12R models with a six-speed manual transmission will be available for purchase. Along with powertrain modifications, the 12R Mazda racing car also gets upgraded Brembo brakes, lightweight Rays alloy wheels with Advan Neova AD09 performance tires, and a custom Bilstein suspension system.
The Mazda Spirit Racing Roadster
Other markets will also carry the Spirit Racing Roadster this year. However, it will not include the upgraded exhaust system or the engine tuned by Spirit Racing. The basic Mazda Spirit Racing Roadster still has the same 2.0-liter engine. It generates 181 horsepower for those looking for a more affordable option.
It still gets some noteworthy improvements, though. These include better brakes, suspension adjustments, and Advan Neova performance tires. Although it lacks the 12R’s aggressive Recaro racing seats, it does have improved Recaro bucket seats. These seats nevertheless provide a sporty feel.
Conclusion
The Mazda Spirit Racing Roadster series strives to provide enthusiasts with an exciting driving experience. At the same time, it follows the lightweight, agile spirit of the MX-5 with its race-bred improvements and eye-catching styling. Both versions should be highly sought after by fans. The 12R could probably become a sought-after collector’s item.
Mazda’s dedication to motorsports heritage and performance-driven innovation is demonstrated by the brand’s debut at the Tokyo Auto Salon. The legendary roadster’s fans and prospective purchasers are anxiously awaiting more information about its availability and future intentions.
