According to reports, Apple is in early talks with ByteDance and Tencent to include their AI models in Chinese-sold iPhones. This action comes as Apple deals with regulatory obstacles and declining market dominance in the world’s biggest smartphone market.
Through its Apple Intelligence feature, Apple recently started implementing OpenAI’s ChatGPT internationally. This allows Siri to manage presentations and summarise content. However, strict rules require generative AI services to receive government approval before publication. As a result, ChatGPT is not available in China.
Apple is investigating local AI models like ByteDance’s Doubao and Tencent’s Hunyuan to address this issue. According to sources, the talks remain in the early stages. Apple and Tencent have not yet responded, while ByteDance has declined to comment.
A possible collaboration could help Apple regain ground against competitors like Huawei. The company has gained prominence in the market with AI-powered products such as the Mate 70 series.
According to reports, Apple and Baidu have also discussed integrating Baidu’s Ernie AI model. However, technological issues, including concerns about data usage, have halted the process. Baidu has remained silent on the issue.
In Q3 2024, Huawei saw a 42% increase in iPhone sales in China, while Apple’s sales decreased 0.3% year over year. Huawei is gaining traction among customers looking for advanced technologies. Meanwhile, some customers have criticised Apple’s latest iPhones for lacking localised AI capabilities.

How Could AI Change Chinese iPhones?
If the collaboration succeeds, Chinese iPhone customers may be able to use localised AI services. These could include content creation and virtual assistants that work smoothly within Apple’s larger ecosystem.
Working with Chinese technology companies could reshape the role of AI in the iPhone product ecosystem. Apple must balance consumer expectations, regulatory obstacles, and a difficult smartphone market as it develops its strategy.
More importantly, this could become an important step for Apple as it works to maintain its presence in China.
