The new hardware would not compete directly with the Xbox Series X or PS5. Display
The new handheld could feature an OLED display with a refresh rate of up to 120Hz, similar to the current Switch OLED model. However, Sharp reportedly developed a new LCD panel for an unidentified gaming console. Nintendo could choose an LCD screen at launch to reduce production costs.
Mobapad, a third-party controller manufacturer, claimed that the upcoming console could feature an 8-inch display with a 1080p resolution.
Features
Nintendo could introduce improved ergonomics, larger Joy-Con controllers, and a redesigned control system. Rumours also suggested that the company could add analog triggers and magnetic attachments for more precise control, particularly in racing games.
The redesigned Joy-Con controllers could include additional buttons. A larger battery could provide longer gaming sessions and make the handheld more practical for extended travel. Improved Wi-Fi connectivity could also provide a better online gaming experience.
Games
Nintendo reportedly prepared new games for its next-generation hardware. A new Mario title could use an updated version of the Unreal Engine. Mario Kart X also appeared among the major games linked to the platform.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake could demonstrate the console’s improved performance. The Bayonetta Trilogy could also receive better graphics and performance on the new hardware.
Eurogamer reported that Nintendo could demonstrate its next-generation hardware at Gamescom 2023.
Is It Backward Compatible?
Nintendo said its next-generation platform would support backward compatibility. This feature would allow customers to continue using their existing game libraries on new hardware. Nintendo Switch Online would also remain available.
Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa said Nintendo Switch software would work on the company’s next-generation system. Players could therefore carry their existing games and services forward to the new platform.
Outlook
Nintendo continued developing new hardware to follow the successful Switch. However, the company had not confirmed whether it would continue using the Switch name or introduce a new brand.
