Sora, the text-to-video generator created by OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is now officially available. OpenAI started the product release series, called “Ship-mas,” on December 9. The company also introduced a new model called Sora Turbo.
ChatGPT subscribers in the US and many other countries can now access Sora through Sora.com. The platform includes several features, such as text-to-video generation, visual animation, and video remixing.
According to OpenAI, ChatGPT Plus subscribers can create up to 50 priority videos with 1,000 credits. These videos can last up to 5 seconds and reach 720p quality.
The $200-per-month ChatGPT Pro plan offers up to 500 priority videos and “unlimited generations.” OpenAI launched this plan the previous week. It supports videos up to 20 seconds long and offers 1080p resolution.
Pro subscribers can also create up to five videos at the same time. They can download their videos without a watermark.
OpenAI first introduced Sora in February. Marques Brownlee, also known as MKBHD, later confirmed the launch after testing Sora himself. He also shared a preview of the service.
How to Use Sora?
OpenAI showed how Sora works during its livestream. The new Explore page features a feed of AI-generated videos created by other users.
The company also demonstrated a feature called “storyboards.” This tool lets users turn photos into videos. Users can also create videos by adding a series of prompts.
OpenAI also showed a “blend” feature. It lets users combine two scenes with AI. Another tool called “remix” lets users change a Sora video with a text prompt.
According to OpenAI, Sora videos include visible watermarks and C2PA information. These details show that AI created the videos.
Before uploading an image or video, users must confirm that the content does not contain copyrighted material, sexual content, violent content, or anyone under 18. OpenAI also warns that users who misuse media uploads could have their accounts suspended or banned.
Rohan Sahai, Sora’s product lead, discussed the company’s approach during the webcast. He said OpenAI wants to prevent illegal activity while still supporting creative work.
Sahai also explained that Sora’s moderation system will continue to improve. OpenAI expects to make changes as it learns more about how people use the platform.
You can still view the feed of AI-generated videos without a ChatGPT subscription. However, OpenAI said that Sora would take more time to launch in “most of Europe and the UK.”
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also said that the service would launch in the US and many other countries first.
To Sum Up
Sora’s launch came only a week after a group of artists reportedly exposed the app. The artists were allegedly part of OpenAI’s alpha testing program.
They protested what they described as the use of their work for “unpaid R&D and PR.” The incident added another layer of discussion around Sora and the role of artists in AI development.
